Regarding the editorial dated June 4, 2008, endorsing Charles Woodle as the best candidate for sheriff of Darlington County — obviously, you do not live in Lamar, as I do, or you would not have written this editorial.
Charles Woodle and the Lamar Police Department have received numerous complaints in the past few months from other Lamar residents about speeding, excessive noise, drug peddling and reckless driving on revoked licenses, etc. All with no action from Charles Woodle other than promises, that “We are watching or working on it.” Darlington County and Lamar are very close-knit communities and obviously Charles Woodle does not want to risk losing votes in the sheriff’s election. Charles Woodle is very adept at dealing with small-minded issues as to which side of the sidewalk yard debris needs to be placed or which recycling barrel to use.
“Change” seems to be the key political word today, but I do not think the citizens of Darlington County will want to change to Charles Woodle’s system. If you never deal with law enforcement in any personal matters, you might assume they are doing a great job. In simple language, lots of cars with shiny paint jobs often have rust beneath the surface.
I personally have requested Charles Woodle to try to control the stray dog problem in Lamar. Darlington County has a leash law and he cannot even enforce a minor Darlington County statute. Based on his apparent lack of success in dog control, one might wonder if he would make a good “dog catcher.”
I fully support Mr. Tom Gainey who has been chief deputy of the Darlington County for several years, and feel when he has complete authority for Darlington County Sheriff’s Department, he can implement the necessary improvement changes for Darlington County.
