Florence Mayor Frank Willis will seek his fourth term in office on June 10 when voters head to the polls for the primary elections. Willis has served as mayor of the City of Florence since May of 1995. Now, Willis hopes that experience and his past record help him win big.
“A record can do one of two things for you. It can hurt you or it can help you. I think in my case my record helps. We’ve got 13 years that we can go back and say here are the statistics,” said Willis.
Willis said if re-elected, he plans to continue focusing on crime.
“We’ve made significant progress in reducing crime in the city, but I am very, very proud of the Mayor’s Coalition to Prevent Juvenile Crime. We’ve seen significant drop-offs in the crime rate among juveniles.”
He also plans to concentrate on economic growth downtown. Willis said the city has got to bring more businesses there and hopes the downtown project leads to more opportunities for local residents.
“What we’d like to do in the downtown area is not just create jobs. Create entrepreneurial opportunities for small business owners. You create wealth by owning your business. Downtown is one of the few places left that a small business owner can grow and prosper,” said Willis.
Willis will face local attorney Stephen Wukela on the June 10 ballot.
