Sonoco has awarded 10 college scholarships to children of its U.S.-based employees. Each student will receive $2,000 per year for four years at the college of their choice. This is the 36th year Sonoco has awarded merit scholarships in support of its employees and education in the communities where they live and work.
Sonoco Scholarship recipients for 2008 are: Rachel Burke, Green Bay, Wis.; Alysha Case, Smithton, Mo.; Hilary Fichter, Massillon, Ohio; Lauren Greiner, North Augusta, S.C.; Cortney Johnson, Hartford, Tenn.; Darlynn Langdon, Hartsville; Casey Miller, Darlington; Ryan Mims, Hartsville; Deborah Saleeby, Hartsville; and Brittany Scott, Petersburg, Va.
Rachel Burke
Rachel Burke, of Green Bay, Wis., is a graduate of Green Bay West High School, Green Bay, Wis. She will attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison, in Madison, Wis., where she plans to study nursing. After college, she plans to pursue a career as a nurse practioner. Her mother, Theresa Burke, is an employee of U.S. Paper Mills Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sonoco, in DePere, Wis.
Alysha Case
Alysha Case of Smithton, Mo., is a graduate of Smithton R-VI High School. Alysha will attend Westminster
College in Fulton, Mo., where she plans to study business management. Her mother, Denise Case, is an employee of Sonoco’s wire and cable reel facility in Green Ridge, Mo.
Hilary Fichter
Hilary Fichter of Massillon, Ohio, is a graduate of Washington High School in Massillon. She will attend Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., where she plans to study business and major in accounting. Upon graduation, she plans to work as an accountant. She is the daughter of Brian Fichter, who works at Sonoco’s ends and closures plant in North Canton, Ohio.
Lauren Greiner
Lauren Greiner of North Augusta, is a graduate of North Augusta High School. Lauren will attend Anderson University in Anderson, where she plans to study graphic arts and English. After graduating from Anderson, she plans to earn a master’s degree and work in art and design/writing. She is the daughter of Henry Martin, III, an employee at Sonoco’s Industrial Products plant in Augusta, Ga.
Cortney Johnson
Cortney Johnson of Hartford, Tenn., is a graduate of Cosby High School in Cosby, Tenn. She will attend Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tenn., where she plans to take pre-vet courses. After graduation, she plans to attend veterinary school at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She is the daughter of Rocky Self, who works for Sonoco in Newport, Tenn.
Darlynn Langdon
Darlynn Langdon, of Hartsville, is a graduate of Hartsville High School.
She will attend Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, N.C., where she plans to pursue a degree in culinary arts and food service management. After graduation, she hopes to gain enough experience to open her own restaurant. Darlynn is the daughter of Risa Langdon, who works for Sonoco in Hartsville.
Casey Miller
Casey Miller, of Darlington, S.C., graduated from Emmanuel Christian School in Hartsville. She will attend the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where she plans to major in nursing and eventually pursue a master’s degree. Upon graduation, she hopes to pursue a career as a pediatric nurse practitioner. Casey is the daughter of Michael Miller, who works for Sonoco in Hartsville.
Ryan Mims
Ryan Mims of Hartsville graduated from Hartsville High School and will attend the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C., where he plans to pursue a degree in biology. Upon graduation, he plans to attend medical school and become a physician. Ryan is the son of R. Chris Mims who previously worked for Sonoco in Hartsville.
Deborah Saleeby
Deborah Saleeby of Hartsville is a graduate of Hartsville High School. She will attend the University of South Carolina in Columbia, where she plans to pursue a degree in accounting. After graduation, she plans to become a certified public accountant. Deborah is the daughter of William Bryan Saleeby, who works for Sonoco in Hartsville.
Brittany Scott
Brittany Scott of Petersburg, Va., is a graduate of Matoaca High School
in Chesterfield, Va. She will attend Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., where she plans to study accounting and finance. Upon graduation, she
plans to pursue a career in accounting and finance. Brittany is the daughter of Barbara Ruffin, who works for Sonoco in Sandston, Va.
