COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ A new report shows South Carolina's graduation rate has improved slightly in five years but remains among the nation's worst.
According to "Diplomas Count," 56 percent of seniors graduated from high school on time with a regular diploma in 2005, compared to a national average of 71 percent. That's up from 51 percent in 2001.
The report released Wednesday puts South Carolina's on-time graduation rate as fourth-worst in the nation, with Louisiana, New Mexico and Nevada faring worse. Previous reports have ranked South Carolina as last.
The report estimates that South Carolina has lost 158 students each school day.
"Diplomas Count" is a project of the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
