Graveside services for Carpenter Earle King Jr., 56, who died Saturday, May 31, 2008, will be held at 4 p.m. today, June 4, in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will follow at the graveside services.
Carpenter was born in Washington, D.C., a son of the late Carpenter Earle King Sr. and Edith Glenn King. He was associated with the Hartsville Messenger, and the Florence Morning News as a photo journalist and was former editor of the Lee County Observer.

JAMES WALTER ‘BOBO’ MARINE JR.
Funeral services for James Walter “BoBo” Marine, Jr. were held on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Entombment followed at Darlington Memory Gardens directed by Hines Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. Isaac Johnson, the pastor of Jerusalem, officiated the services.
Mr. Marine was born June 18, 1941, in Hartsville, a son of Lottie Jackson Marine and the late James Walter Marine Sr. He was educated in the Darlington County public schools and graduated from Butler High School in 1959. He then enrolled at St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Va.
After college, he married the former Carolyn Williams and this union was blessed with four children. He was first employed at Hartsville Manufacturing Company and remained there for four years. In 1966, he began working at E.I. Dupont in Florence and stayed there until he retired in 1995. “BoBo,” as he was called by all of his colleagues and employees at Dupont, was a part of the management team there and was highly respected by all.
“BoBo” was a faithful member of Jerusalem Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He previously served as chairman of the Trustee Board, sang on Gospel Chorus and was recently a member of the Senior Choir. He was also affiliated with Myrtle Lodge 64.
He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Henry, and a sister, Carolyn Bessie.
Surviving to cherish the loving memory of James Walter Marine Jr., in addition to his mother, Lottie Mae Marine of Hartsville, include his wife, Carolyn Williams Marine of Hartsville; three daughters, Tami Renee Glasco of Florence, Kimberly Michelle Marine and Audra Yolanda Marine, both of Hartsville; his son, James Walter (Mia) Marine III of Charlotte, N.C.; his sister, Daisy Marine Martin of Hartsville; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a host of cousins, other nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Graveside services for Carl Griggs Jr., 72, who died Saturday, May 31, 2008, were held on Monday at 3 p.m.

Mr. Griggs was born in Hartsville a son of the late Carl Griggs Sr. and Mary Watford Griggs. He was a retired electrician, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, where he was an Instrument TEC. He was a member of the Hartsville Moose Lodge, where he was a past governor.
Surviving are sons, Wayne Griggs of Mobile, Ala., Donnie Griggs of Greenville, Tenn., Michael Griggs, of Lexington, Scott Griggs of Jefferson City, Mo.; daughter, Lynne Treadaway of Society Hill; brother, W.T. MARY McIVER JAILLETTE
DARLINGTON — Mary McIver Jaillette, 79, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008, at Medford Place in Darlington after a brief illness.
She grew up in Society Hill and attended Winthrop College. She moved to Darlington with her husband, Harold Prentiss Jaillette, and their four children, where she has lived for the past 50 years. Mrs. Jaillette was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Samuel Zimmerman Black, Walter LeGrande Black; and a sister, Betty Black.
Surviving are her children, Harold Prentiss Jaillette Jr. (Sarah), Ann Jaillette Dennis (Chip), Mary Jaillette Altman (Bill), and Samuel Stewart Jaillette; eight grandchildren, Harold Prentiss Jaillette (Sheri), William Dane Altman (Dorie), Amy Elizabeth Johnston (Schipp), Edward Colgate Dennis III (Judy), Jenny McIver Altman, Bobbie Jaillette Altman, Elizabeth McIver Harry (Brice), Samantha Dell Jaillette and her fiancee’ David Campbell. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, Bella Jaillette Lizzie, Emma, and Schipman Johnston, Laurel and Jed Dennis, Wilson and Clara Harry and Madison, Harrison and Jameson Altman.

Funeral services for Samuel Murphy “Sonny” Langston, 67, will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 4, 2008, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. John Smith will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins is serving the family.
Mr. Langston died Sunday, June 1. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Samuel Murphy and Kathleen Koon Langston. He was retired from Sonoco after 36 years of service. He was a member of the Sonoco Old Timer's Club, Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173, and the Omar Shrine. He enjoyed taking his family on vacations before his health declined.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Hope Langston of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Murphy and Michelle Langston of Hartsville, Matthew and Hayley Langston of Hartsville; sisters, Mary Ann Parnell of Columbia, Judy Corder of Columbia; grandchildren, Peyton Langston, Cayden Langston.
MARY SMITH ARNOLD
DARLINGTON — Mary Smith Arnold died Sunday, June 1, 2008, at Bethea Baptist Retirement Community. She had resided there since 2007 after living independently for more than 90 years. Mary was an individual who treasured her spirituality, her family and putting others before herself.
She was born on Jan. 16, 1915, in Charleston, daughter of Henry McDonald and Minnie Broom Smith. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mose Arnold, a son, Danny Arnold, and three siblings, Henry M. Smith Jr., W. Leonard Smith and Aileen Smith.
Mary worked for the Darlington County School District for many years in the Superintendent’s Office. She had retired after working at Florence-Darlington Technical College for several years. She loved to tell stories about her life experiences and the fun she had with people. Mary was a member of Central Baptist Church and Black Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Dick (Glenda) Arnold, David Arnold and Mike (Susan) Arnold. She had seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 4, at 3 p.m., with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Outlaw died Saturday, May 31. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of Beatrice Gandy Smothers and the late William Edward Smothers Sr. She was an understanding and compassionate person. She had a great love for her family and never judged anyone.

DARLINGTON — Roger Stumpf, 87, died at McLeod Hospice House, on Friday, May 30, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at Temple Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by Pastors Bruce Kimbrell and Todd Parrish. Interment will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Mr. Stumpf was born Boone, Iowa, son of the late Harold and Bernice Tegarten Stumpf. He served his country for many years with the Merchant Marines and during World War II. He retired from ROHM & HAAS in Bristol, Pa., and was a member of Master Men, Temple Treasures and Temple Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary K. Stumpf of Darlington; his son, David R. Stumpf of Spruce Grove Alberta, Canada; his daughters, Elizabeth Greenwood of Ronks, Pa., and Susan DiMattia of Bensalem, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Ivadell Coizer of Mississippi; step-son, Terry Matthews of Florence and step-daughter, Marilyn Godwin of Lalburn, Ga.

Mr. Pope, widower of Addie Melton Pope, died Friday, May 30. Born in Towns, Ga., he was a son of the late William Moses and Rebecca Heath Pope. He was a long time member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 35 years of service. He was a member of Hartsville Masonic Lodge # 173, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Omar Temple.
Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Chris Pope of Hartsville, Mike and Monnie Pope of Manning; sister, Merlene Harrison of Athens, Tenn.; grandchildren (spouse), Hoyt (Stephanie) Kelley, Candy (Russ) Tidwell, Sherry Cottingham; great-grandson, Ethan Tidwell. He was preceded in death by his daughter, LaRaye Pope.

She retired from Sonoco and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timer's Club. She was a member of the Mental Health Board, volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Drive, and was a resident of the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina.
Surviving are her brother, Edwin H. Dunlap of Durham, N.C.; six nephews; four nieces.

Mrs. Johnson was born Sept. 6, 1915, in Appling County to the late George L. Walters and the late Madie Brown Walters. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hartsville and was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Deal Johnson, and three sisters, Willa Mae Parmenter, Jewell W. Morgan and Loretta W. Douglas.
