It’s high school graduation time.
Congratulations to the Class of 2008. You worked hard to get to this point, and are to be commended.
This week seniors from public and private high schools all over Darlington County will reach one of life’s milestones as they move from one phase of their lives to the next.
It is time filled with anticipation and expectancy.
Many seniors will move on to the next level of their formal education, college, university, technical college. Others may choose other paths.
Here are a few things for young people to consider as they get ready to graduate.
Education does not end at high school graduation. It does not end at college graduation. Education is a lifelong process. Enjoy it. Relish it. Commit now to being a lifelong learner. You’ll be grateful you did.
It’s a big world out there. Don’t forget who you are and where you came from — and who helped you get where you are. And thank them — always.
At the same time, it’s a big world that gets smaller every day. You owe it to yourself to try to understand and learn about the world, about other cultures and societies. Study their history. Learn another language.
As you work to develop your global perspective, do not forget your own community.
Get involved. Volunteer. Whether it is in your hometown, your college community, wherever.
Right here in Hartsville opportunities abound. The Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, the Free Medical Clinic of Darlington County, Meals on Wheels, Hartsville Interfaith Ministries, just to name a few. There are also countless opportunities through local churches, your local schools and PTA organizations.
The list could go on.
In his posts on hartsvilletoday.com, contributor Richard Puffer always ends his remarks with a note we should all heed: “Build your community by being involved.”
Many seniors have been involved in volunteer activities while in school. Now, we look forward to seeing them and others build their communities.
