Johnnie D. Rogers Jr. has been representing District 5 on Florence County Council for six and a half years.
He was elected to fill an unexpired term and was re-elected four years ago.
He is seeking re-election and is being opposed in the Democratic primary by Andy Wilson.
No one has filed to run in the Republican primary, so it is expected that the primary winner will represent the district for another four years.
In interviews with the Morning News, both men take similar positions on several key issues, such as the hospitality tax — both are for it — and the current road maintenance fee — both are for it.
Neither man is ready to commit to where they think a new county court house should be located, but both realize they have to represent not only their district but the county as a whole.
We hope whoever is elected will keep that foremost in their minds on any issue the council faces.
Both men grew up in the district, and both push recreation as a key role for county government.
Wilson and Rogers both have served as volunteer fire fighters.
Rogers is proud of the new libraries, especially the one being built in Olanta.
So area residents face a tough choice in who will represent them for the next four years.
Council will face some pretty tough issues going forward.
We haven’t always agreed with Rogers and council, but it appears that Rogers’ knowledge and experience on council give him an edge.
