Police have arrested a Florence man on charges stemming from the robbery of two neighbors last week.
Ronnie Michkel Drake, 20, of 1212 National Cemetery Road is charged with three counts of first-degree burglary, three counts of armed robbery and resisting arrest, Florence Police Lt. James Rogers said.
The suspect is accused of assaulting two men living next door to each other in a Florence apartment building May 27.
“The defendant went in, attacked the guy assaulted him and took his wallet,” he said. “Then he went next door and did the same (to the other victim).”
When officers noticed the suspect walking away from a car in Florence on Friday, they tried to arrest him, Rogers said.
The officers ordered the suspect to get on the ground, but he ran away instead, Rogers said. The officers began running after him, going across Palmetto Street toward Evans Street, then back toward Palmetto Street until he made it back the the spot where they first found him.
The suspect then got back into his vehicle and tried to flee, but officers were able to stop him after a short car chase, Rogers said.
The suspect tried to run again after the car he was driving was stopped, but officers put some of their new training to use to apprehend the suspect.
“They had to actually Taze him to get him to stop,” Rogers said.
There were many outstanding warrants against Drake at the time of his arrest, Rogers said.
“He’s the one that was charged with some prior home invasions several months ago,” he said.
Drake remains in custody at the Florence County Detention Center in Effingham awaiting a bond hearing before a circuit court judge.
