It’s been two days since an off-duty Chesterfield County deputy was killed in a head-on collision near McBee.

Sgt. Darryl Quick had been with the sheriff’s office since 1999 and according to Sheriff Sam Parker, had worked his way up the ranks from a school resource officer to a senior sergeant.

While those who knew him say he was devoted to his job, they say he was also devoted to his family and the community.

According to officials, Quick served as a deacon at Outreach for Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Cheraw and also as an assistant basketball and baseball coach in the Small Fry and Dixie Youth Leagues.

Those who know Quick’s family say prayer and faith are helping them get by.

“They’ll get by it. You know, it may take a while, but they’ll get by it. They’ll get by it and having God in your life and stuff, that does so much better, you know,” said Tyron Davis, who was Quick’s cousin by marriage.

Quick’s funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday at First Baptist Church in Cheraw.
