The Myrtle Beach International Airport is going to get a face-lift.
The discussion over how and when that will happen was the focus of Thursday night’s airport advisory committee meeting.
Rick Ott, with MB Kahn Construction said a plan is being developed to increase passenger terminal capacity on the east side of the Myrtle Beach International Airport.
Ott said they are in the first step of six-month planning process, a plan that likely won't see the first signs of construction for about five years.
"It will be 2013, 2014 before this project is complete and so we need to plan for the future, not for today." said Ott.
Doug Decker, who lives in Horry County, told Ott he wanted to speak to the group about his ideas for the future of the airport, but Ott said the meetings are just open for the public to attend, not give formal comments.
"We are not hiding anything, in fact we're trying to engage the public into it and so we're having our in house meetings open to the public so what you're seeing is the sausage making of designing and building airports." said Ott.
But the public is not going to be left out of the process, people can write formal comments or send emails and Ott said they will be included in the company's final report to county council, so the public's input can be part of the official presentation.
Ott also said he and some other members of the advisory committee recently took a trip to a similar sized airport in Orlando and said they may try to incorporate some of what they saw there into the Myrtle Beach expansion.
Starting in the middle of august, the airport advisory committee is going to have a series of public information meetings all over Horry County.
