FMU continues making steps to help educate Pee Dee students

»  Comments | Post a Comment

South Carolina, and especially the Pee Dee, needs to continue efforts to make sure our residents get the education they need.
Our region’s well-being will continue to depend on an educated work force to compete in today’s world.
That’s why a recent move by Francis Marion University and Northeastern Technical College to partner so that the two-year TEC students can transfer more easily to FMU is so important.
Not all students need a four-year degree.
And the TEC schools are continuing to make sure that they offer programs that meet the needs of business and industry.
But for those that can’t afford or aren’t ready for a four-year school, the option to take courses at Northeastern and be eligible for transfer to FMU is good news.
FMU President Dr. Fred Carter and Northeastern Tech President Dr. Ron Bartley announced the program recently.
Northeastern joins a partnership already announced with Florence-Darlington Technical College in April.
Students can enroll this fall.
Systems are in place to make sure the students qualify, take the proper courses and make the proper grades.
Bartley said in an earlier interview with the Morning News that one of his goals was to establish a more prominent partnership with four-year institutions and public schools in the region.
“This is an exciting event for me because my goal is to create as many options for students as I possibly can,” Bartley said in an interview with the Morning News.
“There’s a whole host of our students that may or may not consider a four-year college, but with an agreement like this ... they can look at a (university) like Francis Marion as a legitimate transfer opportunity.”
FMU President Dr. Fred Carter said in a press release, “This relationship will allow both institutions to leverage the resources of faculty, facilities and technology in responding to the demands of local students.”
And we certainly agree.
