For many teens the summer is the time when they get to rest and have some fun, but that’s not the case this week for some teens in Kingstree.
More than 30 volunteers from across the state have joined forces to make life a little easier for two local families in Kingstree.
Trevor Wise is a high school sophomore from Clover, South Carolina.
He along with about 20 other teens have come to the Pee Dee to make a difference.
"I decided to come down here so I could reach out to people that are less fortunate than me and help them with their houses that are damaged,” said Wise.
The group is participating in an annual summer service project called Salkhatchie.
The program was created more than 30 years ago and has grown to more than 45 camps across North and South Carolina.
Rev. Jack Washington is the Kingstree Camp Director has been participating in Salkahatchie for 23 years.
"The purpose of Salkahatchie as I see it is to be the hand of god reaching out to those who are unable to help themselves,” said Washington.
The teens will be working for a week and will be doing a number of things including replacing a roof, installing a bath tub and painting.
