RUBIN SMITH

DARLINGTON – Rubin Smith, 74, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and formally of Darlington, died Friday, July 11, 2008, at a New York hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young and Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

CHRISTINE JOHNSON MOORE

Memorial services for Christine Johnson Moore were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2008, at the Gilbert Hines Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Samuel Sparks III officiated the services.
Mrs. Moore was born Dec. 31, 1946, in Hartsville, a daughter of David and Mattie Taylor Johnson. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and graduated from Butler High School in 1965.
She was first a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. She later joined Monument of Faith in Durham, N.C. She was married to Willie Moore, and this union was blessed with five children.
Mrs. Moore was employed with Marriott Hotels in the hospitality department for a number of years until her illness forced her to retire.
She was a BIG talker and never met a stranger. She loved to shop, but her passion was looking after the elderly. She had a special place in heart for those who needed her help, and she will be remembered most for the passionate way in which she interacted with those less fortunate.
Surviving to cherish the memory of Christine Johnson Moore include her husband, Willie Moore of Durham, N.C.; two daughters, Kimberly (Frank) Sampson of Fayetteville, N.C. and Willette Moore of Durham, N.C.; three sons, Christopher Moore, Warren Moore and Kenard Moore, all of Durham, N.C.; three sisters, Louise Addison, Josephine Johnson and Frances (Jamie) Bryant, all of Hartsville; two brothers, David (Shirley) Johnson and Antonio (Ruth) Johnson, both of Hartsville, S.C.; one half brother, Johnny Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

TOMMY JENKINS

William Thomas “Tommy” Jenkins Sr., 71, died June 29, 2008, in Helena, Mont. Mr. Jenkins was born Aug. 3, 1936, in Statesville, N.C., to William Thomas “Buster” Jenkins Sr. and Mary Lucille Jenkins. He graduated from Hartsville High School and Carolina Business College He served in the US Air Force as a top secret teletype operator.
Mr. Jenkins married Elsie Chapman on Oct. 25, 1958, and they raised two daughters, Maria and Laurey in Florence where he worked for Rental Uniform for 16 years as a supervisor and for Standard Coffee and Zee Medical. In 2002, he and his wife moved to Helena.
Mr. Jenkins loved the outdoors and spent countless hours fishing, hunting and golfing. It was regrettable that he was not well enough to enjoy those activities in the Big Sky Country of Montana. Mr. Jenkins played baseball for the Air Force and for the local teams. He coached Pony League baseball for years.
Mr. Jenkins is preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife of 49 years of Helena, Mont.; daughters, Maria Cooper of Florence and Laurey Britt of Riegelwood, N.C.; mother, Mary Lucille Summers Jenkins of Hartsville; grandchildren, Summer Hardee Pettigrew of Charleston, Amber Kirven of Riegelwood and Brandon Hardee of Florence and his beloved Yorkie, Daisy.

CARL KING

Services for Carl William King, 88, were held Saturday, July 12, 2008, at the Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ed Griggs officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Mr. King died July 10, 2008. He was born in Chesterfield, the son of the late James Leonard and Lila Northcutt King. He was a retired farmer, and a Sonoco Millwright retiree. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church, Patesville Masonic Lodge # 295, Omar Shrine Temple, Red Fez Club, Jolly Jeepsters and Sonoco Old Timers Club. Though he had no children, Mr. King is survived by a loving great-nephew, Jamie King. He and his wife, Tara, tended to Mr. King and loved him as family. In turn, Mr. King looked upon Jamie as a son, Tara as a daughter and their son, Cody, as a grandson. Their compassion and devotion filled Mr. King’s last years of life with contentment. Other survivors are: sister-in-laws, Annette King, Ruby King, Arduth King, all of Hartsville; nieces, Betsy (Bill) Herrington, McBee, Katherine (Smitty) Soles, Diane (Arlon) Winburn, both of Hartsville, Melissa (Rick) Mullis, Ruby, Phyllis (Tommy) Teal, Chesterfield, Shari (Ben) Carter, Lamar, Kim (Gus) Dixon, Columbia; nephews: Michael (Shirley) King, Atlanta, Ga., Harry King, Donnie King, both of Hartsville and Randy (Pat) King, Cheraw; and several other great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Drew, Brock, Malcolm, Manning, Bill and Jake King; and sisters, Betty Sullivan and Sadie Bruton. DICKSON

SOCIETY HILL – Funeral services for Mrs. Pearl Althea Zenobia Thompson Dickson of Columbus, Ohio, and formerly of Society Hill, were held on Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Bethesda Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery, directed by Mitchell
-Josey Funeral Home Inc. in Darlington.
Mrs. Dickson, 102, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, in a Columbus, Ohio, hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late Peter and Julia Law Thompson. She was the widow of the Rev. Joseph S. Thompson.
She received her education in the Marlboro County public school system. She was an elementary and adult education teacher.
She was a member of Triumph Chapter #128 Order of Easter Star where she served as a Worthy Matron.
Survivors include: two daughters, Julia Dickson Howard of Olympia, Wash., and Naomi Dickson (McLain Sr.) Davis of Columbia, Ohio; one sister, Etherine T. Cain of Bennettsville; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Dickson of Taylors; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by a son, Joseph Dickson III: by her siblings, Theo Robinson, Madeline Leake, Rosa Thompson, Cleon Thompson and Everett Thompson.
Wake services were held on July 5 at Bethesda Baptist Church with Eastern Star Rites.

SARAH A. JEFFERY

FLORENCE – Funeral services for Ms. Sarah A. “Doll” Jeffery of Florence were held on Saturday, July 12, 2008, in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness West Congregation, Florence. Burial was in St. John United Methodist Church cemetery, directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home Inc. in Darlington.
Ms. Jeffery died on Monday, July 7, 2008, in a Florence hospital after an illness. She was born in Darlington, a daughter of the late Jerome and Sarah Marcus Jeffery.
She received her formal education in the Darlington County public schools and continued her education in Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, N.Y., in business education.
At an early age, she attended St. John United Methodist Church. After moving back to South Carolina from New York, she moved to Florence where she became affiliated with the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include: two sisters, Bessie Louise Boseman of Darlington and Ruby J. Cotton of Florence; two brothers, Roosevelt (Linda) Jeffery of Pompano, Fla., and Robert Jeffery of Clearwater, Fla.; two aunts, Mrs. Corrie Lee Stevenson of Darlington and Mrs. Mollie Jeffery of Hartsville; two sisters-in-law, Mary Jeffery and Mamie Jeffery, both of Darlington; special nephews, Louise Jeffery, Gregory Cotton, Michael Cotton, LaVelle Jeffery and Shemal Jeffery; two special nieces, Sheila Cotton and Julia Ilene; a host of nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her siblings, T. J. Darvia, Willie “Skirt” and Louis Jeffery.
