Carl Capps Sr.
Carl Ellis Capps Sr., 76, husband of Peggy Chandler Capps, died Friday, July 11, 2008 in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence. Born on March 29, 1932 in Marion County, he was a son of the late Richard T. and Lila Drew Capps. Mr. Capps retired as an insurance agent for Liberty Life Insurance Co. and worked as a service manager for Rogers Chrysler-Dodge in Mullins. Mr. Capps was a Mason and a past Master of Damascus Lodge #161 in Mullins. He was a former member of the Mullins Rotary Club and a member of Northgate Baptist Church in Florence, where he was a teacher of the John P. Marshall Sunday School Class. Surviving Mr. Capps, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Carl Ellis Capps Jr. of Quinby and Richard Capps and his wife Beverly of Florence; granddaughter, Phoebe Rogers and her husband Marty; three great grandchildren, Jacob, Nicholas and Maggie; a sister, Lucille Capps Watson of Silver Spring, Md.; his mother-in-law, Dana Bouldin; and his sisters-in-law, Cathy Hawks and Sandi Hammond, all of Thomasville, N.C. Mr. Capps was predeceased by two brothers, Clyde Capps Sr. and Billy Joe Capps and by three sisters, Isla Capps Collins, Flora Capps and Virginia Bumbarger. A funeral was at noon on Monday, July 14 in the Northgate Baptist Church in Florence, with the Rev. Gerald McCants officiating. Burial followed in Devotion Gardens Cemetery in Mullins, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Marion Danny Herring
Marion Danny Herring, 57, of Conway, died Saturday, July 12, 2008 in Conway Medical Center after an illness. Mr. Herring was born in Conway, a son of the late Leo Marion and Ruby D. Richardson Herring. Mr. Herring was a member of Aynor Church of God, and before his retirement, was owner and operator of Marion Danny Herring Construction. He was predeceased by a sister, Lilly Herring and a brother, Willie Ray Herring.Surviving Mr. Herring are his wife, Virginia Lee Herring of Conway; a son, Danny Lee Herring and his wife Christy of Marion. A daughter, Melissa Denise Branton and her husband George of Conway; four brothers, Leon Herring of Moncks Corner, Harold Herring and his wife Kay of Effingham, and Ronald Herring and Raymond Herring, both of Conway; a sister, Louise Jordan and her husband Richard of Conway; three grandchildren, Madison Denise Branton of Conway and Ashley Nicole Hardee and Bobbie Leigh Grahler, both of Marion; and sister-in-law Charity Herring of Conway.Services were at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 in Aynor Church of God with the Rev. Jerry Love and the Rev. Fred Hudson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Goldfinch Funeral home, Conway. Roger Williams Baker
Roger Williams Baker, 72, died Monday, July 7, 2008 at home, after an illness. Born on Jan. 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Neal T. and Florence Williams Baker of Friendship.
Mr. Baker was born in the Britton's Neck Community of Gresham. A service honoring him was at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 13 in Friendship Baptist Church.
Mr. Baker was retired from the construction business, where he was a heavy equipment owner and operator. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
Surviving him are his wife, Judy Martin Baker; six daughters, Jody Cooper of Marion, Gale Richardson of Carolina Forrest, Paula Baker of Marion, Dixie Baker of Winston Salem, N.C., Daisy Baker of Lake City and Tory Baker of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Dorothy Neal Baxley of Penderboro; three brothers, John Baker of Gresham, and Mike and Pate Baker both of Mullins; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church at 6133 Highway 9, Gresham, 29546.

Catherine Sansbury Cross
Catherine S. “Cat” Cross, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008. Services were at 11 a.m. on July 11, 2008 in Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joe Blackwelder. Interment followed in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington.
Mrs. Cross was born in Timmonsville, the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Arah Griggs Sansbury. She started school in Lake Swamp Grammar School and completed her formal education at Winthrop College, having earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics in 1949. Mrs. Cross later became the Director of Food Services for the Darlington County School District and served in this position for 35 years until her retirement in 1984.
Mrs. Cross was a civic-minded person and served her community in many capacities, to include Past President of the Darlington Heart Association, member of the Pee Dee Area Girl Scouts Council for over 25 years, member of the Board of Directors for the Winthrop Foundation and Past President of the Winthrop College Alumnae Association, past President of the National Association of Accredited Talent and Beauty Pageant Judges. She also directed the Miss Southern 500 Beauty Pageant for 11 years.
A longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she served in many capacities there, as well, to include Past President of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Cross was a former recipient of the “Outstanding Citizen of the Year” for the City of Darlington and earned the title of Who’s Who of American Women. She was named to “Personalities of The South,” and was twice honored by the Boy Scouts of America for outstanding service, as she served on the Pee Dee Council. She also was awarded the “Order of the Arrow” award by the Santee Lodge of the Pee Dee Area in 1968. She loved her family, her community, and her church.
Survivors include her husband, Fred H. Cross; her son, Howard Cross and his wife Sherry of Florence; her daughter, Cathy Cross Kirby and her husband C.C. of Darlington; brothers, Jerrel Sansbury and his wife Elinor of Darlington and Ferrel Sansbury and his wife Barbara of Santee; sisters, Margaret Newsome and her husband Hugh of Hartsville, Marilyn Sansbury and Carolyn Humphries both of Florence; four grandchildren, Catherine Elizabeth Cross, Caroline Susan Cross, Blakely Coy Kirby, and Lanie Esther Kirby, and many other relatives. She was predeceased by her brother Lonnie Sansbury and her sister Belle Branham.

Lois Alford
Lois Alford, 81, widow of P.D. ALford Jr., died Friday, July 11, 2008 in Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
She was born on July 30, 1926, a daughter of the late Zack and Emma Coleman. Mrs. Alford was a retired employee of Heritage Sportswear of Marion, where she worked for over 40 years. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and an active member of the Women's Missionary Union.
Surviving Mrs. Alford are a son, Jimmy Alford of Marion; a granddaughter, Sara Alford of Greenville; a brother, Zack Coleman Jr. of Marion; and a sister, Blanch James of Marion. She was predeceased by a sister, Sara Williams.
Services were at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2008 in Friendship Baptist Church, Gresham. Burial followed in Tabernacle Cemetery in Gresham, directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church, Building Fund, 6133 Highway 9, Gresham, 29546.

Robert Rogers
Robert Alan (Robin) Rogers, 51, died Friday, July 11, 2008 in Nashville after a brief illness. Services were at 4 p.m. Monday, July 14, in Marion Baptist Church, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Richardson Funeral Home. Mr. Rogers was born in Dillon County, a son of the late Nelton and Shirley Page Rogers and was a member of the Marion Baptist Church, the Oak Tree Sunday School Class. He was Assistant Principal at Creek Bridge High School. He received his bachelor's of arts degree at Francis Marion University and his master's degree at the University of South Carolina. His survivors include his wife, Cindy Blum Rogers; a son, Joshua Morris Rogers; four aunts, Joyce Baird of Turbeville, Jan Lombardo of Myrtle Beach, Judy Raspberry of Florence, and Linda Hyatt of Dillon; an uncle, Ben Page of Myrtle Beach; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Blum of Marion; in-laws, Diane and Bill Bean of Spartanburg, Ricky and Theresa Blum of Pleasant View and Kathy W. Blum of Conway; and a number of nieces, nephews.Mr. Rogers was predeceased by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Cornie Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Page; a brother, Russell (Rusty) Nelton Rogers; his father-in-law, Morris Blum; a brother-in-law, Allan P. Blum; and a nephew, Adam Bean. Memorials may be made to Creek Bridge High School, Robin Rogers Scholarship, P.O.
