North Myrtle Beach police charged 40-year-old James Glen Matheson with charges that could get him life without parole if convicted.
Matheson faces burglary, pointing and presenting a firearm at a person, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, attempted strong armed robbery, and possession of an unlawful weapon.
The possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime carries a life without parole provision, and the burglary-first degree charge carries a life sentence.
Police said on July 9, Matheson broke into a home on Golfview Drive in North Myrtle Beach armed with a 9mm handgun.
Matheson ordered a male victim inside the home to lay on the garage floor of the residence, then tried to tie his hands behind his back with plastic zip ties.
A female victim entered the garage and Matheson pointed the 9mm gun at her, when she turned and ran away, according to police.
When Matheson turned his attention to the female, police said that’s when the male victim whose hands Matheson tried to tie up broke free.
The man was able to chase Matheson down, take his gun and hold him down until police arrived.
When police arrested Matheson, he confessed to breaking into the home in an attempt to rob the people inside, according to the arrest warrant.
A judge set Matheson’s bond at more than $35,000, but Matheson will have to face a circuit court judge to have his bond set on the burglary charge because of the possibility of a life sentence.
Matheson remains jailed at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center awaiting the circuit court hearing.
A county judge will set his bond on the possession of a weapon charge Thursday afternoon.
