CAROLYN SUMMERFORD

LEXINGTON – Graveside services for Carolyn Best Summerford, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville. The Rev. Noble Kendall of Lake Murray Church, Chapin, will officiate. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the Summerford family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship of S.C., Inc., P.O. Box 211084, Columbia, S.C. 29221.

Mrs. Summerford died Monday, July 7, 2008. Born in Darlington County, on Sept. 16, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Toland H. and Carrie Banks Best. She was a graduate of Hartsville High School and attended Coker College. “Grandma Carolyn” was deeply loved by her two granddaughters, and three great-grandsons. She considered her son, Richard, as her greatest accomplishment in life. She will be missed by all her family and many caregivers. Sincere appreciation is expressed to everyone at Lexington Medical Center Extended Care facility for their devotion to her.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Richard Nathaniel and Linda Summerford of Chapin; nephew, Kenneth H. Best of Winston-Salem, N.C.; granddaughters, Jennifer Lynn of W. Columbia and Lisa Renee' of Columbia; great-grandsons, Aydin Carwell Quick, Averi Frederich Quick and Leland Nathaniel Bateman. LEONARD ‘PETE’ CANFIELD

ABBEVILLE – Mr. Leonard “Pete” Canfield, 75, of Abbeville, husband of Wilma Powell Canfield, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at the Hospice House in Greenwood. He was born in Greenwood to the late Jesse Odell Canfield and Odessa Oliver Canfield. Mr. Canfield was a retired textile supervisor and former owner of Cherokee Trail.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Gardner.

Mr. Canfield is survived by his wife of 54 years of the home; two sons, Dwayne “Bubba” Canfield and Rick Canfield and his wife, Debbie, all of Abbeville; two daughters, Valerie Ashley of Ware Shoals, and Danette New and her husband Kenny of Hartsville; a brother Jesse Odell Canfield, Jr. of Greenwood; a sister, Vivian Teasley of Taylors; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
The family is at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Canfield may be made to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander St., Greenwood, S.C. 29646.

ALICE L. JOHNSON

Funeral services for Alice L. Johnson Burns, 91, widow of Bernard Jack Burns, who died July 5, were held Monday, July 7, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. Grover Johnson officiated. Burial was in the Westview Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Burns was born in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late Mae and Katherine Morrison Johnson. She was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church. Surviving are a brother, Troy Johnson, Hartsville; and several nieces and nephews.

CAROL McLENDON

Memorial services for Carol McLendon, 73, were held Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at 2 p.m. from the Hartsville Advent Christian Church. The Rev. Charles McLendon officiated. Directed by Norton Funeral Home, visitation was held Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. McLendon died at his residence on July 4. He was born in Bishopville the son of the late Wheeler W. and Bertha Grantham McLendon. He was a member of the Hartsville Advent Christian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Denise (Tony) Ricci, Myrtle Beach; a son, Leo McLendon, Hartsville; two sisters, Carolyn Di Salvator, Okla., and Sara Henderson, Florence; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Mike McLendon.

MARY HAZEL JONES

DARLINGTON - Mary Hazel Stokes Jones, 87, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at the Heritage Home of Florence. Funeral services were at 11a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jones was born in Clark County, Ga., daughter of the late Houston and Lina Elizabeth Anglin Stokes. She was married to the late Thaddeus Leroy “Bub” Jones. Mrs. Jones was a housewife and was one of the oldest members of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Martha Ann the late Dr. Thomas DuBose of Lamar; Mrs. Linda (Derrick) Weatherford of Latta and Mrs. Bonnie (Wayne) Turbevillle of Darlington; nine grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by two sisters, Mable S. Baldwin and Sadie Stokes.

HENRY J. DICKEY

Funeral services for Henry J. Dickey will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Green Hill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by Young and Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mr. Dickey, 81, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at his residence after an illness.

Mr. Dickey was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Roland and Louise Mumford Dickey. He was reared by the late Henry and Minnie Graham Mumford. He received his education in the public schools in the area and graduated from Butler High School class of 1945. He was a member of Green Hill Baptist Missionary Church and served as a deacon. He was a retired employee of Sonoco Products Company.

Surviving are his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lillian Cotton of Hartsville, Mary (Tim) Campbell and Minnie (Frank) Thomas, both of Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

WILLIAM ‘DICK’ McNEESE JR.

Funeral services for William Blaney “Dick” McNeese Jr., 70, were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, 2008, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Horace Jackson officiated. Memorials may be made to the Swift Creek Baptist Church, 413 N. Center Road, Hartsville, S.C., 29550.

Mr. McNeese died Wednesday, July 2, 2008. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late William Blaney McNeese Sr. and the late Cleo Rollins McNeese. He was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Odom McNeese of Hartsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Terry McNeese of Hartsville, Wilber and Debbie DeLorme of Chesapeake, Va.; daughter, Sonya Smith of Schreiner, La.; sisters and brothers-in-law Carolyn McNeese of Brunswick, Ga., Mary Linda Horne of Hartsville, Nancy and Terrell Bishop of Jacksonville, Fla., Susan and Dennis Hodge of Darlington; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild,. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tamsie McAnich; and a brother, Wiley McNeese.

Graveside services for Janet Marie Griggs Cook, 60,will be held Thursday, July 10 at 3p.m. from the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

JOHN GUNTER HOWLE

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – John Gunter Howle passed away in Jacksonville, Fla., on July 1, 2008. He was born May 10, in Columbia, S.C. He graduated from Hartsville High School and from Appalachian State University. Mr. Howle was a member of Island View Baptist Church in Orange Park, Fla., and a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother.

John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Jeanette. His daughters and sons-in-law are Virginia Clara and Dell Cook, Katherine Margaret and Eric Farmer; his grandchildren are Katherine Patricia Cook, Lauren Grace Cook and Andrew Washington Cook. His surviving brothers and sisters-in-law are David Samuel and Carol Howle, William Mason and Rendy Howle Jr. Mr. Howle was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nell Howle and stepmother Ruth Howle.

Following a service in Vietnam with the U.S. Air Force, John worked with technology in civil service, and, before his retirement, was the director of the Information Technology Department at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla.

Funeral services for Mr. Howle were Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Island View Baptist Church. The service was conducted by Dr. Paul E. Wrenn Jr., and Rev. Wendell Cook Jr. Interment followed in Riverside Memorial Park in Jacksonville. Memorials may be made to the Island View Baptist Church music department at 900 Park Ave., Orange Park, Fla. 32073.
