Democratic candidates on Iraq war

»  Comments | Post a Comment

In the News13 Network’s "Voice of the Voter" survey, participants told us that illegal immigration was the issue they were most concerned about. That was followed by the war in Iraq, corruption and ethical standards, health care, and education.

According to Dr. Neal Thigpen, a political analyst, the issue of the Iraq war creates a big division between parties. Thigpen said while most Republican candidates stand firmly behind the Bush administration, almost all of the Democratic candidates say they’ll end the war if elected.

"The big thing on the Democratic side is who was against the war first. I mean, that’s the issue between the Democratic candidates," said Thigpen.

Hillary Clinton has not committed to a withdrawal timetable and says some troops will have to remain to continue fighting terrorism in Iraq and the region.

Barack Obama wants "our combat troops out within 16 months," according to The Associated Press.

John Edwards wants immediate withdrawal of as many as 50,000 troops and full withdrawal within 10 months.

Dennis Kucinich favors troop withdrawal and cutting off additional money to continue the war.

Mike Gravel wants "to commence an immediate and orderly withdrawal of all U.S. troops that will have them home within 120 days," according to his website.
