Republicans will brave the chilly January temperatures in South Carolina on Saturday when they head to the polls to vote for America’s next commander in chief. And as they mark their ballots, many will be taking into consideration the issues that matter most to them.
In the News13 Network’s "Voice of the Voter" survey, participants told us that illegal immigration was the issue they were most concerned about. That was followed by the war in Iraq, corruption and ethical standards, health care, and education.
When it comes to immigration, the Republican candidates vary some on their solutions. Rudy Giuliani says most of the U.S.-Mexico border should be policed with high-tech monitoring and supplemented by a fence in some parts.
Mitt Romney supports building a border fence with Mexico and calls for tamperproof ID cards so only legal immigrants can work.
John McCain says he would secure the border first and also supports a border fence. Mike Huckabee also talks about securing borders "and will never allow amnesty," according to his website.
Fred Thompson opposes the conditional path to citizenship for illegal immigrants that President Bush supported.
Duncan Hunter favors deporting illegal aliens.
According to his website, Ron Paul wants to "physically secure our borders and coastlines."
