The Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) at the S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville is a statewide outreach program designed to pair academically talented high school students with scientist mentors in research laboratories across the state for a six-week, hands-on internship. Fields of research include medicine, computer science, engineering, microbiology, nanotechnology and more.
SPRI is a graduation requirement for all Governor’s School students, but non-Governor’s School students from other public, private or home school settings are encouraged to apply.
Non-Governor’s School students who participate are known as SPRI Scholars.
Following their six-week internship, SPRI Scholars must submit a formal abstract and present their work at the GSSM annual Research Colloquium in February 2009. Applicants must be South Carolina residents and rising seniors at least 16 years old by June. They must have at least a B+ average and have demonstrated interest in science, computer science or mathematics.
Applications must be received on or before Jan. 25, and are available online at www.scgssm.org or by calling the Governor’s School Outreach Office at (843) 383-3958.
