The former Kimbrell’s building at 135 S. Dargan St. will see light once again, as the Art in the Windows Committee announced Tuesday there will be a second art gallery opening in the building Monday.
The decision came after a Dec. 22 committee meeting, where the positive response of the first art opening was discussed.
“We reviewed what had gone on over the last several weeks and plotted the plans for phase two (of the Art in the Windows project),” Art in the Windows committee member Dr. Jane Madden said.
“We couldn’t ignore the public response,” she said. “We needed to do something about handling the demand and excitement.”
Madden said many visitors to the building’s first exhibit earlier this month left comments on how they felt the exhibit could be improved.
Yet, the most popular comment was in favor of more such exhibits, Madden said.
While finding volunteers to maintain the exhibit was troublesome during its inception, she said, people were coming to the committee and asking to be volunteers.
“We have more artists contacting us. Also, we had other people coming forward, saying, ‘I want to sponsor a window,’” she said. “One individual came up wanting to be a part of something where something was actually happening. I think that’s a sign.”
The Arts in the Windows Committee will meet Monday to discuss phase two of the Arts in the Windows project, which will include putting art in six more vacant buildings.
“(The buildings) have already been chosen, but we have to double check on the logistics, though,” Madden said.
Logistics include proper resources and environments to display the art, which often is enhanced by light to make it visible during the night.
The times of the gallery also will be extended to include Saturday.
Madden said she is optimistic about the second gallery opening, which will feature new art and artists.
“Just about every artist has indicated they’re putting up new works to a certain degree. In fact, we have a very exciting award-winning new artist who is working entirely in sea shells,” she said.
One of the most interesting aspects of the gallery opening was that people of all ages were drawn to it, Madden said.
“I heard one 12-year-old girl say when she entered the building, ‘Is this a real place?’” she said. “I said, ‘Yes, it is. Come in and check it out.’”
