Wound Healing Center treats first patient

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System is treating its first hyperbaric chamber patient.

Danny Morris of Timmonsville has been suffering from diabetic ulcers for over three years. “We have experienced a lot of trial and error for treatment, including everything from artery replacement surgery to expensive creams,” explained Morris’s wife, who travels over an hour with Danny each morning for treatment.

“When we heard about the Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System we were excited about this new option in treatment that seems to be very promising!”

Danny is in the beginning of his treatment,” explained Dr. Robert Vyge of Marion Regional Healthcare System. “We are using the newest therapeutic methods in wound treatment and other healing centers nationwide are averaging a healing rate of 89 percent attained in 12 to 16 weeks of therapy. The chance that we will save his leg from amputation is very high.”

Likely candidates for treatment are those suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, compromised skin grafts and flaps, and wounds that haven't healed within 30 days. The center's hyperbaric oxygen chambers can also be used to treat patients suffering from such uncommon ailments as cyanide poisoning, gangrene, carbon monoxide poisoning, brown recluse spider bites and the “bends,” or decompression sickness.

The Wound Healing Center at Marion Regional Healthcare System is on U.S, Highway 76 between Marion and Mullins. A National Healing Corporation Wound Center, it specializes in the treatment of chronic wounds and non-responsive conditions and offers hospital-based outpatient wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy as well as disease management and diabetes care. The Joint Commission
on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has awarded National Healing Corporation Disease-Specific Care Certification for wound care.
