Employees of Progress Energy’s H.B. Robinson Plant in Hartsville will be giving a Hartsville area family a special Christmas.
The “Ambassadors,” the plant’s mentors who shadow area elementary school students, are conducting their annual community service project with students from North Hartsville Elementary School.
The program is made of volunteers who demonstrate the importance of community service with a service project.
This year, the mentors and their students opted to present gifts and food to a needy family for the holiday season. Andy Cole, communications specialist for the plant, said the event is done completely by the employees of the plant rather than by the corporation.
Cole said an e-mail was sent out with a list of what the family needed, and employees began donating the needed items, which includes food for the family and toys for the kids.
On Tuesday, the ambassadors met their students for lunch at Pizza Hut in Hartsville, then had dessert at the school. After dessert, the mentors and students wrapped Christmas presents for the family.
“It is as much of a benefit for us adults as it is for the students,” mentor Tyrone Lynn said. “Giving back to the community is a gift in itself.”
“It’s just exciting to be able to light up someone’s life,” said Valerie Haynesworth, another mentor. “It helps us show the kids that if they put their minds to it, they can accomplish anything. Maybe one day they will grow up and get a job at Progress.”
The students said they had a great time with their mentors and liked the idea of helping a needy family during the holidays.
“We’re helping kids ages 2 through 5,” student Ryan Johnson said.
Ryan is no stranger to this type of work. He said he did a similar project four years ago.
Students Tiffany Quick and Colby Fields also said they thought helping out was fun.
“Wrapping presents and eating,” Colby said of her day of work. Tiffany even helped out, despite feeling a little under the weather.
The presents and food will be delivered to the family later.
