Council gets ready to spend infrastructure money

In other business, in his remarks to council, County Attorney Charles McLain told Marion County Council members this past Tuesday that he had received a communication from Detwyler, a plastics company in the county, regarding their fee in lieu of tax agreement.

In that agreement, county held title to the property and it was vested to the county for the fee agreement. However, the company has moved the machinery from the Marion County to Mexico. County officials agreed to the move. According to McLain, the movement of equipment has not affected jobs in the county.

County Administrator Tim Harper asked council members to create, and they approved, a Resolution of Appreciation to be presented to outgoing Marion County Economic Development Director Frank Jones.

Additionally, Harper said, “We brought up the tax anticipation note at this past month’s meeting.” Harper said the county had two responses to the bid for the note and have completed the bid process and selected the bid of First Citizens for 2.71 percent. The other bidder for the note was Carolina First, he said, at 3 percent.

Harper said officials with the Pee Dee Council of Governments said at a recent meeting that a strong chance exists for a proposed federal stimulus package for infrastructure projects to be passed.
The county needs to be ready with a list of projects so the money can be put to use can be done quickly … Harper is hoping the building of the county’s long awaited family court building could be on the list.

Harper told council members if the county did not get a plan together, it likely wouldn’t be able to get anything later, or it would be harder to get money from the federal government in the future. It is hoped that when county and municipal officials meet in January, the list can be put together.
