HEMINGWAY – Frequent conferences between Hemingway Police Chief Bryan Todd, and the Georgetown and Williamsburg Sheriffs’ Departments have led to a break in a series of break-ins in all three areas.
The three agencies worked together to share intelligence and lists of suspects.
A break came when Todd spotted a person driving who was known to him to have a suspended drivers license.
On Wednesday, Dec 10, Todd arrested Justin Leroy Vanderhorst, 25, of Nesmith and brought multiple charges against him. According to Todd, he pulled over the suspect on South Main Street, just south of Tanner’s Service Station. When he returned to his car to call in the info, the suspect threw a black gun out the passenger window and took off at a high-speed, whereupon he jumped from the still moving car and ran into the woods opposite the Chavis School. Todd gave chase and captured the suspect.
The handgun was recovered and traced to a stolen gun from Georgetown County. Vanderhorst was charged with unlawful carrying of a hand gun, resisting arrest, failure to stop for a blue light, DUS 3rd and failure to surrender drivers license.
Because the Georgetown Sheriff’s Department already had a warrant on the suspect, he was turned over to the Georgetown Detention Center after joint questioning by all three police agencies.
Todd said the suspect is also a key suspect in the rash of recent burglaries, and more charges against him were pending. He said additional arrests were also pending.
In another event, Todd said a road spot check was held on Monday, Dec. 8 on a Hemingway back street, which led to $4,000 worth of citations. Three persons were arrested, he said, with charges ranging from ABC violations, DUS and open containers. This event was conducted by the Hemingway Police Department.
