Robert ‘Bobby’ Thomas Jones
Robert “Bobby” Thomas Jones, 67, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 in Carolina’s Hospital System after an illness. Services were on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 in the Marion Baptist Church. Entombment with full Masonic Rites followed in Mt. Hope Mausoleum in Florence. Mr. Jones was born in Florence, a son of the late Robert “Bob” Newton Jones and Irma Lee Goodman Jones. He was a retired machine department operator for Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, where he worked for 41 years. He belonged to several organizations and was a member of Marion Baptist Church, organizer with the Eastern Carolina Agricultural Fair for 51 years (with 33 years as manager), Amity Mason Lodge and Pee Dee Shrine Club, where he served as second vice president for four years. He was the current president.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Moody Jones; daughters, Patressa J. Gardener and her husband Phillips of Darlington, Leslie Jones Halchak of Chapin, Rita Hayes Graham and her husband Neil of Thomas River, N.J.; brothers, Allen E. Jones and his wife Deana of Florence and Richard “Rick” H. Jones and his wife Frankie of Florence; four grandchildren, Major and Annabelle Jones and Henry and Hazel Goodman. Bessie A. Sanderson
Bessie Allen Sanderson, 83, widow of Paul Sanderson and formerly of Mullins, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008 in McLeod Regional Medical Center. Born on Feb. 12, 1925 in Apalachicola, Fla., she was a daughter of the late John C. and Iris Peddie Allen. Mrs. Sanderson, along with her husband Paul, owned and operated the Mullins Bakery for many years.
She was a lifelong member of Mullins First Baptist Church, until moving to Florence, where she attended The Church at Sandhurst.
Surviving Mrs. Sanderson are, her children, Ron Sanderson and his wife Joy of Florence, Don Sanderson and his wife Judi of Nichols, Gail A. Grice of Florence, Paula L. Sanderson of Florence and Steven A. Sanderson of North Myrtle Beach; her grandchildren, Paul Sanderson and his wife Melissa, Craig Sanderson, Laura Grice, Amy Stokes and husband Will, Jason Grice, Allen Sanderson, Austin Sanderson, Matthew Sanderson, Aaron Sanderson, and Grace Sanderson; two great-grandchildren, Bradley Clark and Sydney Sanderson; two sisters, Julia Allen of Apalachicola, Fla., and Connie Hicks of Winter Springs, Fla.
Mrs. Sanderson was predeceased by a brother, John Willard Allen, and a sister, Olis A. Page. Services were on Wednesday, Dec. 10, in the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins. Robert Keener Foxworth
Robert Keener Foxworth, 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008 in Marion County Medical Center after an illness. A graveside service with full military honors was at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008 in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Foxworth was born in Marion County, a son of the late William Hular Foxworth and Addie Marvin Williams Foxworth. He was retired from the U. S. Navy and was a member of Pee Dee Southern Methodist Church.
Surviving are his sisters, Imogene F. Cooper of Myrtle Beach and Barbara F. Cook of Pine Bluff, Ark.; and a special friend, Susan Waugh of Marion. Memorials may be made to the Pee Dee Southern Methodist Church, c/o Shirley Hucks, 3215 Austin Road, Marion, 29571.
Shirley White Gardner
Shirley White Gardner, 69, of Conway died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 in her residence. Mrs. Gardner was born in Marion, a daughter of the late Bernie and Hallie Rowell White.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret Jordan and Kate Platt.
Surviving are her son, Sidney Spivey (Madeline) of Conway; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, William David (Linda) White of Marion; two sisters, Bernice Baxley of Wilmington, and Eliza (Earrol) Scurry of Marion.
Graveside services were on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 in Palmer Cemetery, Centenary, with the Rev. Dennis Lewis officiating.
Julia Sanders
Julia Evelyn Sanders, 60, died on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 in the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Her parents were the late Preston and Ida Beatrice Sanders. After graduating from Marion High School in 1971, she was employed by Russell Stover Candies, SoPakCo and Heritage Sportswear. At an early age, she was affiliated with the Pleasant Grove Holiness Church. She later joined the Highway Church of Christ and was a watch care member of the New Greater Deliverance Church for all People.
Her son, Maurice, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sisters and brothers, Lillie Mae Leonard, Alberta Graves of Newark, N.J., Layre Johnson, Calvin, Boyd, Harvey, Gene and Andrew Sanders. A funeral was on Friday, Dec.5, 2008 at Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, with Elder Don Huffman, eulogist. Interment was in Green Lawn Cemetery.
Dora Huggins
Dora Johnson Huggins, “Mama Dora,” was born in Berkeley County on July 4, 1910, to the late Mary Johnson. She attended the public schools of Berkeley County and, after relocating to Marion, met and married the late Jerry Huggins.
She was preceded in death by her son and is survived by her daughters Annie Nelson and Ernestine Huggins and their families.
A funeral was on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, with the Rev. Frederick Graves, eulogist. Interment was at Devotion Gardens.
Albert Burnice Palmer
Albert B. Palmer, 89, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, in Marion County Medical Center after an illness. A graveside service was on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, in the Devotion Gardens Cemetery.
Born in Florence County, he was a son of the late Larue Artice Palmer and Ola Mae Gore Palmer. Mr. Palmer was a member and former deacon of McMillan Memorial Baptist Church and a retired farmer.
Survivors are his wife, Doretha M. Palmer; seven sons, Larry (Sarah) Palmer, Dwight (Peggy) Palmer, Terry (Tammy) Palmer, Keith Palmer, Jerry Palmer, Danny Palmer and Gary Palmer, all of Marion; eight daughters, Hope (Von Dean) Turbeville, Linda (Robert) Collins, Dale Edwards, Bonita (David) Cooke Jr., Elizabeth (Jessie) Haselden, all of Marion, Joyce (Ed) Mishoe of Conway, Wanda Stokes of Effingham and Lorraine (Paul) Johnson of Mullins; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Katherine Merryman, of Aynor.
Jerry R. Demery
Jerry Raymond.Demery, 55, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008 after an extended illness. Born in Marion County, he was a son of John Quincy Demery and the late Mary Easter Cooper Demery.
Surviving Mr. Demery are his sisters and brother, Idora Cooper of Florence, Geraldine Stroud of Lake View Jimmy Demery and his wife Mary of Latta, Landis Turner and her husband Gerald Wayne of Pamplico; a special friend, Mack McLellan; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were on Monday, Dec. 8 in the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wendell Lee officiating. Burial followed in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Magdalene Sawyer Drew
Magdalene Sawyer Drew, 80, wife of Eugene Drew, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008 in McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence after an illness. She was born July 11, 1928 in Marion County, a daughter of the late Olin Maloy Sawyer Sr. and the late Ernestine Collins Sawyer.
Mrs. Drew was a member of the Marion Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School class. She held many offices in her church, and in the association. Mrs. Drew helped to organize a church media library and volunteered each summer to work in the White Oak Library. She helped with the collecting of material and publishing of two church histories.
Mrs. Drew graduated from the Southern Baptist Seminary Extension Department in 1980 and was a member of the Auxiliary of the Marin Camp of Gideons and a member of the Tranquil Homemakers Club for many years, where she held office in her local club as well as on the county level. She held craft classes with clients at the Spring Branch Residential Center.
In 1988, Mrs. Drew’s family represented Marion County as the “Family of the Year” and in 1992, she was chosen “Homemaker of the Year” for Marion County.
Surviving Mrs. Drew, in addition to her husband of 62 years are, two daughters, Cynthia Faulk and husband Ray of Mullins, Teresa Emory and her husband Wayne Edwards of Burnsville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Brown and her husband Corey, Dr. Julie Falk, Jason Faulk, Lindsey Edwards and Derek Edwards; two brothers, William Howard Sawyer of Marion and B.J. Sawyer of Charlotte, N.C.; and four sisters, Mary Alice Meridth of Johnsonville, Sarah Lawton of Myrtle Beach, Shelby Boette and her husband Emory of Columbia and Hazel Rogers of Mullins.
Mrs. Drew was predeceased by a grandson, Dylan Edwards and a brother, Olin Maloy Sawyer Jr.
Services were on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, in the church sanctuary, with Dr. Denley Caughman and the Rev. Bobby Byrd officiating. Burial followed in Devotion Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Gideons, P.O. Box 34, Marion, 29571 or to Marion Baptist Church, 106 S. Main St., Marion, 29571
James H. Estes Jr.
James H. Estes Jr., 83, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 in McLeod Hospice House, Florence. Born in Union County, he was a son of the late James H. Sr. and Rachael Horne Estes and was predeceased by his wife, Toni Causey Estes, and a sister, Rachael Gray.
He was the owner of Southern Printing Company in Mullins for many years. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving as a member of the Signal Corp. Mr. Estes was a member of the Mullins First Baptist Church, a life member of Woodmen of the World, and a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and very knowledgeable about the Civil War. He was an avid collector of Civil War artifacts and other treasures.
Survivors include two sons, James H. (Jimmy) Estes and his wife Lisa of Johnsonville and Fletcher William Estes of Mullins; two daughters, Cynthia (Cindy) Phillips and her husband Charles and Maria Estes all of Mullins; two step-daughters, Janet Mincey and her husband Carlisle of Nichols and Marcella Osteen and her husband Kermit of Florida; nine grandchildren, James H. Estes IV, (Jamie) Kayla Lynne Estes, Kaitlin Nicole Estes, Mandy Taylor Godbolt, Cecily Morgan Taylor, Tyler Matthew Estes, Tracy I. Mincey-Rodriquez, Kelly Mincey Satterfield and Angel Mincey Bruno; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were in Mullins First Baptist Church on Dec. 7, with the Rev. Jim Kirkland officiating. Interment followed at Mayers Cemetery in Mullins. Memorials may be made to Paws to the Rescue, 123 Dog and Cat Court, Mullins, 29574 or to the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, 402 N. Mincey St. Nichols, 29581.
Pearl Woodberry Lewis
Pearl Woodberry Lewis, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008 in her home after a brief illness. Services will be at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 10, in the Richardson Funeral Home, with burial following in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Lewis was born in Marion, a daughter of the late George Woodberry and Ruth Boatwright Woodberry Page. She was predeceased by her husband, W.I. “Zeke” Lewis and a brother, George “Buddy” Woodberry Jr. She was a homemaker, member of Marion Baptist Church and a Marion High School graduate.
Surviving is her son, William Roger Lewis and his wife, May Goude, of Marion. Memorials may be made to Marion Baptist Church, 106 South Main Street, Marion, 29571.
