The fall sports season has come and gone. And, as is usually the case each sports season, several Pee Dee teams played for or won state championships.
Teams that won state championships include:
- Football: Dillon, Class 2A; Chesterfield, Class A Division I; Dillon Christian, SCISA Class A.
- Girls tennis: Carolina Academy, SCISA Class 2A.
- Soccer: Marlboro Academy, SCISA Class 2A.
- Cross country: Trinity Collegiate, SCISA Class 2A.
- Volleyball: Emmanuel Christian, SCACS Class 2A.
Teams that lost in state championship games include:
- Football: Carvers Bay, Class A Division I.
- Girls tennis: Green-Sea Floyds, Class A.
- Volleyball: Johnsonville, Class A.
In addition to teams winning or playing for state championships, several Pee Dee athletes have signed with or committed to play at Division I colleges. Those include:
n Football: West Florence’s Malliciah Goodman (Clemson), John Coleman (Duke), Sydney Sarmiento (Duke), and Avery Murray (Maryland); Lake View’s Quandon Christian (Clemson); and Marlboro County twins Tariq and Tyrell Edwards (Virginia Tech).
- Tennis: West Florence’s Bobby Browning (Furman).
- Baseball: Lake City’s Shane Miles (Charleston Southern)
The success of all these teams and individuals is a tribute to the dedication of the players, coaches and parents. Athletes who reach the highest levels in their chosen sport often embark on that journey at an early age, and they often have tremendous support from coaches and parents. Through very hard work and hectic schedules, they realize their dreams.
The success of all these teams and individuals is also a tribute to the strong competition each faces in the Pee Dee week-in, week-out. Every championship team, every individual should be grateful for opponents that pushed them to be the best.
Athletics are excellent extracurricular activities. They’re breeding grounds for self-esteem, sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, fitness and proper nutrition.
And when a region consistently turns out state champions, state runners-up and college athletes as the Pee Dee does, it means many folks involved are doing things the right way.
We tip our caps to the players and coaches who realized their ultimate goals of winning or playing for state championships this fall. And good luck to those athletes who will take their skills to the collegiate level.
