Dallis’ Café in Marion and Webster Manor in Mullins have been included in a new book about South Carolina’s favorite places to eat. Stop Where the Parking Lot’s Full, a 301-page soft cover illustrated book, represents almost 20 years, 20 pounds, and hundreds of miles of statewide restaurant reporting, a press release about the book says.
Published by Sandlapper Society, Inc., the book includes updated restaurant reports that appeared in Sandlapper magazine from late 1989 through mid-2008.
“Tim Driggers, Sandlapper’s restaurant columnist, visited both restaurants and really captured their unique attributes,” Aida Rogers, the book's editor, says. “Besides good food and the incredible Ooey Gooey Sandwich, Dallis’ Café has Dallis Brady, the owner. Tim was able to describe her ebullient personality in his report, which was written as a letter to Oprah Winfrey. In his column about Webster Manor, he writes about an elegant country inn that draws customers from several counties around. I’ve eaten at Webster Manor too, and can attest to its delicious buffet and classy atmosphere.”
“Sandlapper’s intent was always to encourage readers to explore South Carolina,” says Rogers, now the magazine’s editor. “We think this book can guide people to interesting places to visit and eat in the Palmetto State. These restaurants are one-of-a-kind, non-chain establishments, which give patrons a taste of more than just good cooking. They give readers a flavor for the community they’re in, the people who live there, and the history surrounding them. This is much more than a typical restaurant guide. This is a culinary South Carolina road trip.”
Founded in 1968, Sandlapper magazine covers South Carolina’s people, places, history and culture. The publication of Stop Where the Parking Lot’s Full highlights the magazine’s 40th anniversary celebration. “For years readers have asked us to publish this book, and we’re happy to comply during this special anniversary year,” says Rose T. Wilkins, co-founder of the magazine. “But we’ve already sold close to 900 copies, so if you want one, you need to act fast.” Three thousand copies were printed.
