Marion County Council will meet at 6 p.m. on Dec. 30 to discuss an economic development issue and to have third reading on a fee in lieu of tax agreement with Mullins’ So-Pak-Co Inc.
A So-Pak-Co representative at this past week’s Marion County Council meeting in the Marion City Hall on Main Street told council members the company plans to make $4 million in improvements at its plant over the next five years. The actions could result in 50 more jobs being brought into the county at the plant, he said, but work on the site would not begin until the first of the year.
Also, the state’s department of commerce will be handling training for the jobs, he said. The fee in lieu of tax will apply for the next 20 years, with it being revisited by county officials every five years. The ordinance passed unanimously.
Because we don’t have another meeting this month, because of Christmas, County Attorney Charles McLain, council was asked to set the Dec. 30 to have third reading of the ordinance, its public hearing and to discuss another economic development issue. Council agreed.
Though on the agenda, council did not have third reading of an ordinance authorizing a special source revenue bond for Carolina AAC. McLain said the ordinance was not ready.
There were no committee reports. Other actions taken during the council meeting are in other stories on this Web site.
