The son of a state representative has died as a result of a traffic crash Thursday in Florence County, Florence County Coroner M.G. “Bubba” Matthews said.

Jasriri Whipper, 24, the son of Rep. J. Seth Whipper, D-Charleston, just before 1 a.m. Friday at an area hospital as a result of multiple body trauma suffered in the crash, Matthews said. Whipper also was a reporter at The Post and Courier.

The crash occurred on northbound Interstate 95 at mile marker 163 just after 9 a.m. Thursday, according to S.C. Highway Patrol reports.

S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins said MAIT troopers are investigating the cause of the collision. MAIT is a multi-disciplinary accident investigation team that reviews vehicle crashes to reconstruct a scene.

Initial reports indicate Whipper’s car hydroplaned, and when he got out of his car, another vehicle hydroplaned and hit him, friends told The Post and Courier.
