A local pet owner who adopted two dogs from the Horry County Humane Society animal shelter says he had to put one of those dogs to sleep.
Ron Swinyer, of Myrtle Beach, talked about the time he and his family adopted the year-old Dachshund named Bumble on Halloween from the shelter.
"He’s just a sweet little dog, so we got him because he's the perfect temperament for us," Swinyer said.
A week later, as a gift to his mother-in-law, Swinyer adopted Bumble's 3-year-old mother, Fancy, from the same shelter. But then they noticed that something didn't seem right.
"They both got pneumonia," he said.
Only Fancy suffered the worst when she became incapacitated and displayed signs of illness now similar to Bumble's.
"On his nose he's got a little bit of crustiness, that's one of the signs and discharge from the eyes," explained Swinyer.
Fancy was put down Dec. 6, leaving her closest companion, Elise Tyler, devastated.
"Well I’m very disappointed about it,” said Tyler, Swinyer’s mother-in-law. “Because when I adopted her I wanted an animal for company."
Swinyer isn't upset at the now closed down shelter for letting him adopt the two sick dogs. But he said losing one dog is already hard enough and now concern over Bumble’s health is something he and his family just cannot bare.
“If they knew about it and still let us adopt them, and then we get home and we bond with them, then somebody has to tell the little one that we're not going to be able to keep the little puppy anymore," Swinyer said.
