Recognizing the importance of trees and the forestry industry in the state, Gov. Mark Sanford declared this past week “Arbor Week.” In keeping in their “Tree Cities” tradition, the cities of Mullins and Marion had their Arbor Day observances this past week, too.
In South Carolina, Arbor Day falls on Dec. 5. On Dec. 3, Mullins officials, Chamber of Commerce members and beautification committee members celebrated the planting of a holly tree in the city’s Wayne George Park.
“A healthy, well-maintained urban forest is one of the many factors that contribute to making the City of Mullins a beautiful and serene place to live and work,” said Mayor Pam T. Lee, reading from her proclamation.
Both Mullins and Marion are designated Tree City USA communities, which is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The Tree City USA flag was later raised at the park.
