Lately, it seems all we hear in the news or read in the paper is bad news, so I wanted to share a bit of good news with you at this time of Thanksgiving. There are still a lot of kind and caring people left in the world to help during the hard times.
My mother passed away last month from brain cancer, and since she had lung cancer 2½ years ago, she did not have any life insurance. When we found the brain cancer, the doctors gave her two to three weeks to live so, she was fretting over her funeral expenses. I, being her only child, told her that this should be the last thing on her mind. She had worked at Carolina Supply House on Second Loop Road for James and Marshall Schofield for many years. They came to see her and told her not to worry about her funeral expenses, that they would have a fundraiser to help.
And that they did! On Nov. 11, James and Marshall, along with the help of her Carolina Supply House family, Richard Barfield, friends and myself, served almost 800 plates to the caring, wonderful people who bought the tickets for the fundraiser. Richard Barfield cooked the best chicken bog I have even eaten!
I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this fundraiser possible and everyone who participated. It’s good to know that in these hard times that we have people in the community like James and Marshall that will step up to the plate and lend someone a hand.
My mother was blessed to have so many friends and people that cared about her. And, my family and I have been blessed to have the support that we have been shown. I have always been one to try to give to others in need, and I truly believe this has been returned seven fold. So, next time someone asks you to buy a ticket for a fundraiser… think twice before you say no, you never know how far that $6 may go.
