Angie Woods, director of Consumer Affairs with the South Carolina Internet Authority, was guest speaker at this past week’s Mullins Chamber luncheon, giving attendees a number of tips to creatively market their product on a “shoestring budget.”
The Charleston-based web group supports businesses and organizations in the state, she said, adding that more than 40 Chambers of Commerce are receiving a web advertising service at no cost or at a discount. The group works with 30 statewide publications, including She Magazine, Woods said, from its site at www.onlysc.com and provides streaming online radio of local artists. Wood told the Mullins Chamber of Commerce members gathered for the monthly luncheon that she helps organize regional launch parties, as well.
Only.SC offers one free listing for all businesses in their directory, she said, adding that there are “quite a few event and listing sites for posting,” and that social media business clients are out there and waiting. Woods also said blog sites are useful tools that have comment sections, allowing for feedback. Those, she told the business community members, are considered up-to-date with current information, because they are constantly updated.
Branding is important, she said, encouraging those in attendance to make sure their message relates to the business and to keep quality business cards handy. One social media she pointed out is the Internet site Myspace, adding that many clients are business owners or promoters looking to get their products noticed. She also said having such a site helps with search engine rankings. “Having those links will actually help your Web sites. Be creative, look for various forms of advertising,” she said. Woods said bartering or trading services is good for networking, but added that the best marketing tip “is to put your business out there.”
She encouraged the business leaders to explore ideas and to use sites that have a targeted and filtered audience.
New chamber members recognized during the meeting were The Fishin’ Hole, The Gateway, Little Promises Learning Center, Community Lifeline and Carolina Realty. The next Mullins Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be at noon on Friday, Sept. 26.
