Elizabeth Bowens was one of two women who spoke to the August meeting of the newly-formed Horry County Violence Reduction Task Force who lost a loved one to violent crime.
Tony Hemingway, Bowen's son, was murdered at the Red Room club in Myrtle Beach in April 2005.
Bowens shared her testimony with the group, which is made up of local law enforcment, prosecutors, and community activists.
"I'm here to let them know I'm very much interested in going out and letting young people know that there is another way," said Bowens.
The group's interim chairman, Bennie Swans, who helped form the group earlier this year in response to crime in neighborhoods all across Horry County, agrees that getting the word out on crime is the only way to stop more young people from dying.
"What we've found is that every neighborhood can develop strategies to improve," said Swans. "It's a matter of recognizing crime follows a pattern. We need to recognize those patterns, and make sure that we can reduce crime."
