NORTH MYRTLE BEACH – A Coastal Carolina University football player has been kicked off the team for violating team rules following an early Thursday morning traffic stop in North Myrtle Beach.
In a press conference at noon, CCU Head Football Coach David Bennett said Scott Fambrough was kicked off the team for being out past curfew – which is midnight.
“I made this decision because Mr. Fambrough was out after curfew, which is a violation of clearly stated team rules. This is not his only violation or brush with the law,” Bennett wrote in a release posted to the university’s athletics Web site.
North Myrtle Beach police arrested Michael Fambrough and charged him with driving under the influence just before 2:30 a.m on U.S. 17 near 35th Avenue South.
“I am not passing judgment on the guilt or innocence of Mr. Fambrough; I trust in the legal process to do that,” Bennett wrote in the release.
Fambrough is the third Chant arrested in the last eight days and the seventh in the last year.
The 6-4 junior played tight end for the Chants and started eight games for them in 2007. He had 11 receptions for 151 yards, according to the team’s Web site. He played high school football at Greater Atlanta Christian in Dunwoody, Ga., according to the site.
“I have taken this serious action because every game we play is important and every player on the team is important not only to the athletic department, but to this university. This decision is in the best interest of Chanticleer Football and Coastal Carolina University,” Bennett wrote.
The arrest came as the Chants were preparing for season-opening away game at Penn State.
“Our focus now is to prepare for a big game on Saturday. I will not allow the actions of a single player to interfere with our focus,” Bennett wrote in the release.
A female passenger, who police said threw up inside and outside of the vehicle, smelled like alcohol, was unsteady on her feet, had glassy eyes, and slurred speech was also arrested.
Nicole Aiello, North Myrtle Beach public information officer said Fambrough and the female passenger were released from jail just after 8:30 a.m.
Fambrough is the third CCU football player to have been arrested in the past couple of days.
Freshman football player Jeremy Harden was charged Monday with simple assault after a dorm fight and freshman William Chandler was charged last week with third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Coastal Carolina president David DeCenzo has warned the team they must take responsibility for their actions.
