'Juneteenth' Festival rescheduled

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Preps are underway for a festival that was actually supposed to take place two months ago.

That festival is coincidentally referred to as the "Juneteenth" and it celebrates the end of slavery in America.

Florence City Councilman Ed Robinson is on the board of the committee that received the money through the city's accommodation tax and he helped direct the funds.

Robinson said the festival was canceled because the venue shut down and Saturday was the next day the band had an opening to play.

"Most people understand, but there were some that were questioning Juneteenth. As a matter of fact it was alleged we had taken money, but it was explained to everybody. For some reason people don't want to believe what happened. Now this will be the ending of it I hope," Ed Robinson said.

Robinson expects between 2,000-3,000 Florence residents to turnout along with entertainers and vendors.

The "Juneteenth" festival is set to start at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Iola Jones Park.

The Florence City Administrator told News13 that when Robinson applies for next years funds under the city's accommodation tax that they will review his accounts and if the money was not appropriately spent for the "Juneteenth" Festival then the Accommodation Tax Committee could deny his agency's funds for next year.
