SUMTER, S.C. (AP) _ Workers are cleaning up about 2,000 gallons of fuel that spilled when a tanker truck and car collided, killing two people in Sumter County.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis said the wreck happened about 9 p.m. Wednesday at state Highways 53 and 341, near the Florence County line. The truck driver was flown to a Columbia hospital, but a name and condition were not available.

Sumter County Coroner Verna Moore said the victims in the car were 21-year-old Travis Lee Wyatt of Florence and 38-year-old Mac Elwood Floyd Jr. of Effingham. Both died at the scene.

Department of Health and Environmental Control spokesman Thom Berry said crews were cleaning and removing soil Thursday. The Item of Sumter reported the tanker was carrying about 7,000 gallons of fuel.
