The Darlington County Cultural Realism Complex Inc. will hold its second annual Intergenerational Extravaganza titled “Building the Bridge Together for this Generation” on Saturday in hopes of bringing people of all ages together to help children “cross the bridge of knowledge and success.”
The 12-hour event, which begins 7 a.m. and ends 7 p.m., will be held at the CRC Vision Complex, 302 Pearl St., Darlington.
Darlington County Councilwoman Wilhelmina P. Johnson, CRC’s executive director, said the extravaganza will be a day full of educational workshops, motivational speakers and roundtable discussions on topics including home, school and community relations, character education, ways to help children focus on education and more.
“I hope they will learn that it takes a community to educate (and) raise the children,” Johnson said. “The children are not out here alone. It takes all ages and stages.
“These children need the help of everyone,” she said. “Everyone has a part to play (in the lives and education of all children).”
Dr. Allie E. Brooks, retired principal of Wilson High School in Florence, will be this year’s motivational speaker.
Brooks’ educational experience spans some 35 years in Florence School District 1, where he was principal of Wilson High, assistant principal at West Florence High School and a math teacher at Moore Middle School.
Brooks, a Florence native, received his bachelor’s degree from South Carolina State University and master’s degree in education administration from the University of South Carolina. He completed the Institute on the Principal and School Improvement at Harvard University and continued graduate work at USC until his retirement. He was awarded an honorary degree from Francis Marion University in 2006.
All ages are welcome to attend the free event, Johnson said.
