Williamsburg County deputies are searching for whoever vandalized a church in Salters this past weekend.
Deputies say it happened at St. James Church of Christ on Highway 52 sometime Saturday.
Among other things, church officials say a roadside sign was destroyed, parts of the sidewalk were torn up, as well as the foundation of the parsonage being built.
Deputies believe a backhoe was used in the crime.
“This is God’s house. They didn’t do the damage to me, they done it to the Lord. No, I had no clue,” said Rick Gray, the church’s owner.
Deputies say the incident was not a random act of violence and instead believe that the crime was committed by a member of the church as a result of an ongoing dispute there.
According to Gray, between 70 and 90 people attend the church, which started up in July of 2007, every Sunday.
Deputies hope to make an arrest in the case by the end of the week.
