A Florence woman was arrested Wednesday after police said she and her newborn tested positive for cocaine, Florence Police Maj. Carlos Raines said.

Lakesha Eyvonne James, 30, of 525 Stackley St. Apt. A, is charged with unlawful neglect toward a child or helpless person, Florence County Detention Center bookings reports show.

Police said the suspect gave birth to a girl in July at a local hospital. The suspect and her child were given a routine test which revealed cocaine in both of their bodies. The child was taken into protective custody after the results of the test were confirmed, Raines said.

James remains in custody at the jail in Effingham. Bond information wasn’t available.
