EFFINGHAM — Florence County sheriff’s deputies are among those investigating a case involving pricey golf carts stolen from the Pee Dee and recovered in North Carolina months later.
So far, 12 golf carts and five trailers turned up after an area golf cart dealer noticed an unusually large number of them showing up in his lot. The dealer pointed investigators toward a suspect, Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said.
“You know this individual is very busy and you think about the agencies that are involved,” Boone said, “... not just limited to the Pee Dee, but you look at other areas of the state like the Midlands and in North Carolina, as well.
“This individual could be responsible for a lot of stuff that we’ve recovered, now about $70,000 worth of merchandise,” he said. “We expect even more and this is just beginning. We’re not sure how big this case could be.”
The thief stole expensive golf carts with fancy paint jobs, and probably was motivated by the demand for the vehicles.
Meanwhile, investigators are working to make an arrest and return the stolen items to their rightful owners, Boone said.
“We’ve got a lot of excitement with those that live in Florence County, and we appreciate the excitement, but it’s tough being bombarded with all these calls,” he said of the theft victims. “... If they could just sit tight and let us identify the things that we have, let us continue this investigation, we’ll call them just as soon as possible.”
