Thumbs up to Florence American Legion Post 1 and coach Derick Urquhart for a strong season that included hosting the eight-team state tournament July 29-Aug. 3 at Legion Field. The tournament, which brought about 160 players and their families to Florence, got under way with a banquet at Florence Civic Center on July 29. Former Air Force football coach Fisher DeBerry was the guest speaker. Once tournament play got under way, Post 1 thrilled fans with its come-from-behind play. In an elimination game against Goose Creek on Aug. 2, Post 1 climbed out of an 11-0 hole and trailed 13-12 in the ninth inning. Post 1 got the tying run to third with one out but couldn’t score, thus ending its season. Post 1 finished 2-2 in the tournament and 24-12 overall.

Thumbs up to The King’s Academy sporting clays team for defending its national championship in Sparta, Ill., Aug. 1-2. The King’s Academy, which also won a national championship in San Antonio in 2007, trailed a team from Minnesota by a point after the first day of shooting. The King’s Academy shooters Braxton Ivey, Austin Mogy and Richmond Wilhoit overcame that deficit on the second day and finished the event with 518 points out of a possible 600 for the title. In addition to the national championship, The King’s Academy’s younger squad of Harrison Boatwright, Hampton Langston and Russ Turner finished 11th in the intermediate division with 400 points. The team is coached by The King’s Academy athletic director Matt Terrio.

Francie Dunlap, development officer for the Florence County Library System, offers thumbs up to Piggly Wiggly. “Piggly Wiggly, founding and sustaining donors for the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation Library as well as winner of the Friends of South Carolina Libraries (FOSCL) Business Award for 2006, has been a long-time supporter of the Florence County Library System. They have helped the Friends by providing refreshments for programs, bags for booksales, food for the Children’s Fall Festival and many other aspects of financial support,” she wrote. “With the recent addition of the Piggly Wiggly Technology Center in the Greenberg Children’s Library, their magnanimous donation has made a tremendous difference for young people of Florence County. From June 2007 to July 2008, 19,092 children used these computers, hence learning valuable technical skills at an early age. The benevolence of Piggly Wiggly has enabled Friends of Florence County Library to fulfill their mission of enhancing the Florence County Library System by raising private funds to supplement public funding in order to provide books, materials and programs for library patrons.”
