Bennettsville slaying suspect won't waive extradition

A hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4 in Virginia for a Bennettsville slaying suspect who will not waive extradition to South Carolina, said Bennettsville Police Sgt. Larry Turner.

U.S. Marshals on July 31 captured Kenwood Bright, 20, who was wanted on a murder charge in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Christopher Antonio Deas.

Bennettsville police will need a governor’s warrant to return Bright to South Carolina, Turner said Monday. The suspect is in jail in Norfolk, Va.

The shooting happened about 8 p.m. July 22 on Hudson Street in Bennettsville. Deas was standing at one of the windows of the suspect’s car when he was shot, Bennettsville Police Chief Larry McNeil said last week.

Victoria Knight, 21, of Hamlet, N.C., was arrested the day after the shooting and is charged with accessory after the fact to a felony, McNeil said last week.

A $25,000 surety bond was set for her release from the Marlboro County Detention Center.
