Three people die in single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95

Three people died Friday in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95 just inside the southern city limits of Lumberton after the vehicle ran off the road and hit trees in the median.

Jerry Thonburg, 59, of Pawleys Island; Grace Carl, 39, and her son, Christopher Carl, 8, both of Georgetown, died at the scene, according to Sgt. Michael Smith of Lumberton Police Department.

The Robesonian of Lumberton reported the accident happened about 6:30 a.m.

Maj. Tommy Barnes of the Lumberton Police Department said the three victims were in a sport utility vehicle traveling about 75 mph. The northbound SUV ran off the left side of the road and hit trees before ending up on its side.

Barnes said the victims were reported dead at the scene.
