There were three things Cezar E. McKnight wanted to be when he grew up.
“I wanted to be an artist, pilot and attorney,” he said thinking back to his childhood days.
In the 7th grade, McKnight said he drew the line and decided to become an attorney.
On Nov. 5, he opened his law office at 106 East Main Street specializing in criminal defense law (state and federal), personal injury and medical malpractice.
One of the things McKnight said he likes best about being an attorney is going to trial.
“It’s exciting and challenging. It’s intense, you have to be prepared. It’s like a contest,” he said explaining that he competes against the other attorney.
McKnight said law school consists of a lot of reading, writing and analytical thinking.
He said during his days as an undergraduate student, he began his studies as an English major and in law school is where he learned the aspects of legal writing.
“As a lawyer, you are writing to a judge,” McKnight said. “You have to make your point early,” he said, explaining the contrast to building a story as in creative writing.
Several attorneys inspired McKnight along the way including Clifton Newman who is now a judge, Ronnie Sabb, I.S. Leevy Johnson and Billy Jenkinson.
Before coming to Lake City, McKnight was an associate in the Clekis Law Firm in Charleston for four and a half years practicing criminal defense, personal injury and medical malpractice.
He also worked in the Law Office of Ronnie A. Sabb and the Williamsburg County Solicitor’s Office.
McKnight is a native of Salters and a 1992 graduate of Kingstree Senior High School.
In 1996, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Paralegal Studies from Morris Brown College and a Juris Doctorate from Florida Coastal School of Law in July 2001.
He is a member of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Gideon Lodge 428 Prince Hall Mason.
