The Friends of Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge and the SC Wildlife Federation will sponsor a workday Saturday at the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge in McBee. The annual event will consist of learning about the wildlife of the refuge, protecting red-cockaded woodpecker trees, completing an interpretive kiosk, clearing hiking trails and building blue bird and wood duck boxes.
The Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is a 46,000-acre longleaf pine forest managed primarily for the red-cockaded woodpecker, a federally endangered species. The refuge is home to streamside pocosins, open fields, hardwood ridges, wetlands and open water ponds.
The Friends of Carolina Sandhills is made up of residents dedicated to supporting the role of the refuge in protecting and preserving the longleaf/wiregrass ecosystem, promoting the enjoyment and responsible use of the refuge by the public, and engaging in educational and civic activities to promote the refuge.
Participants should meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Refuge headquarters office, 3.5 miles east of McBee on U.S. 1 in Chesterfield County. They should wear field clothes and bring work gloves, lunch, drinks and a snack.
