Heisman Foundation recognizes Mullins students

Steven Smith II and Samantha Carper represented Mullins High School at the 2007 Wendy’s Heisman awards banquet in Myrtle Beach on Nov. 12.

The two were among the many students from school districts through out the Pee Dee and Coastal regions who represented their schools for excellence in academics, community service, as well as athletics. A plaque bearing their names was presented to be displayed in the school’s trophy case.

Smith is the son of Steven Smith Sr. and Gena Smith of Mullins.

He was nominated for his membership in several honors organizations, clubs and programs, as well as his academic status.

Among these was president of the MHS beta club, a member of the National Beta Club, president of the National Arts Honor Society, recipient of the Governor’s Citizenship award, Junior Scholar, National Honor Society, Spanish club, Who’s Who Among Students Nationally, Teacher Cadet, SIP, Mullins Chamber of Commerce citizenship award,  Merit Scholar,  Math team,  Head Junior marshal, and Wachovia Scholar. 

He was also selected as a delegate for the Palmetto Boys State and attended the University of South Carolina’s Moore Business School minority program this past summer.

He has volunteered for the Hurricane Katrina relief, Toys for Tots, St. Jude’s children hospital and the Manor house and serves as an usher at Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

He has the highest average in his senior class of ’08 and has been a four-year letterman on the Mullins varsity basketball team. He will letter on the varsity baseball team this year for the third year. Smith says he plans to enroll in USC’s pre-med program.

Carper, daughter of Bill and Jan Carper, was nominated for her honors as well.  She is a member of the MHS beta club, National Beta Club, National Art Honor Society, SIP, Yearbook editor, Newberry Scholar, Teacher Cadet, Junior Marshal, 2nd runner up Miss MHS, was voted most intelligent senior girl, has a 4.11 GPA, and lettered in Academics for three years.

She has participated in various sports, lettering three years on the volleyball team. She also was senior captain of the team and lettered on the varsity soccer team and cross country.

She ran track for two years for the varsity program and says she hopes to pursue a nursing career upon completion of Florence-Darlington Technical College and a subsequent four-year college.
