Citizens want answers

A public hearing, to address the firing of a Nichols police officer, will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 3 in the city hall, Nichols Street.

Police Officer Dan Blue was fired earlier this month, but the circumstances surrounding that decision are unknown. City of Nichols Council member Tommesenia Floyd said Nichols Police Chief Von Dean Turbe-ville fired Blue. The town's mayor, James Little, and the Police Chief aren't saying why Blue was fired.

Floyd said citizens had been interested in the hiring and firing policies of the city, but that this most recent incident, was the "icing on the cake." A flyer being distributed about the public hearing says the commu-nity wants answers from the council and the mayor.

Some of the issues to be discussed include the diversity policy of the city, how many minority residents are in the city and the equal opportunity policy of the city, according to the flyer. All town residents are encouraged to attend.

Anyone wishing to speak at the hearing must call City Clerk Emily Johnson at (843) 526-2193 to get on the agenda. City Hall is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
