GOP national committee member to challenge Sen. Graham

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBIA (AP) - A Lexington orthodontist has decided to challenge Senator Lindsey Graham in a Republican primary next year.

Buddy Witherspoon will travel across the state this week to announce his candidacy. The 69-year-old is in his third term on the Republican National Committee. His campaign says he will resign to run for Graham's seat.

Witherspoon says Graham compromises too much with Democrats and faults the senator for his role in pushing President Bush's failed immigration proposal.

Witherspoon is also former Lexington County Republican Party chairman. He joins at least two Republicans who announced they would run.
