Innuendos fly during meeting

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Every time a black business opens in Scranton, the white community tries to bring it down, Cephus Peterson said, as he addressed Scranton Town council this past week.

Peterson owns Jr’s Designer Place, on U.S. Highway 52, across from Scranton Town Hall.

He said he has heard that members of council are saying he is selling drugs.

“Its coming from the board up here, and they need to stop,” Peterson said, “and they know who I’m talking about too.”

Peterson stood while addressing council but frequently gestured toward the approximately 25 people in attendance. Council made no comment to Peterson.

FCSD3 Superintendent Beth Wright, who also addressed council, said she is no longer concerned that Wilson Express & Restaurant, which recently opened on U.S. Highway 52, will be a liquor store.

The business is owned by brothers, Nathaniel and Robert Wilson, who were both also present during the meeting.

“We want to be another great business for the community,” Nathaniel Wilson said.

“At no means do we want to do anything to bring the district down,” explaining that it was a misconception that the business was to be a liquor store. Instead, it will be a convenience store and offer money orders and lottery tickets, he added.

“Our concern is drinking on the premises,” said Mayor Terry Knotts.

“We are trying to make the area uplifting, and will have no type of hanging out,” Robert Wilson said. “We are happy to be in the community and in Scranton.”

In old business, Debbie Matthews, of Florence County Planning and Codes Enforcement explained the second readings of the following amendments which were approved by council:

þ Copy of manufacture home installers licenses

þ Site plans to be drawn on paper or plats

þ Provide proof of septic systems for manufactured homes in certain situations

þ Reducing parking spaces for hotels to one per room

The council went into executive session, following which Mayor Knotts said no decisions were made.

The next Scranton Town council meeting will be Dec. 10 at 6 p.m in Town Hall.
